BiteSmart: a second pair of eyes for food labels and restaurant menus

BiteSmart is a companion for people managing food allergies, intolerances, and dietary restrictions, and for families deciding what everyone can eat. Set up a food profile, photograph a label or menu, scan a food barcode, or type an ingredient list. BiteSmart compares the information it can read with the active profile and explains its results. It is a second look, not a guarantee.

What it can help with

Profiles, lists, and ordering links

You enter your allergy and dietary profile in the app. BiteSmart does not scan medical records. Profiles can include intolerances, diet types such as vegan, vegetarian, keto, or halal, custom ingredients to avoid, and notes. Food profiles cover the 14 major EU-regulated allergens as well as other common allergens and ingredients you add yourself.

AI analysis is available in more than 40 languages, and responses can follow your device language. BiteSmart can attempt to read many label languages, but unfamiliar text and translation can introduce errors. Keep the original package in view and check its label directly.

Create grocery lists, then continue to services linked from the app: Instacart, Walmart+, Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods, and Shipt. The links open the retailers’ own websites. Product inventory, delivery locations, and checkout are handled by each service.

After analyzing a restaurant menu, the app can open DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Grubhub. Those are links to external services, not live ordering integrations. BiteSmart does not receive your final order or verify substitutions, recipe changes, kitchen practices, or cross-contact. Check specific ingredients and preparation with the restaurant before eating.

What a check can—and cannot—tell you

A camera can only assess the text visible in the photo. Glare, small print, curved packaging, cut-off ingredients, and unfamiliar names can all affect what is recognized. A barcode lookup depends on a product listing with ingredient information; a missing listing is not evidence that an item has no allergens. Review the current package every time, because ingredients and manufacturing processes can change.

Menu scans and dish-name lookups are starting points for a conversation, not a confirmation of a restaurant's exact recipe. Ask about sauces, preparation surfaces, shared fryers, substitutions, and cross-contact. If an allergy is severe, follow the guidance from your clinician and ask the restaurant directly before ordering.

Diet preferences help shape suggestions, but are not a substitute for the medical advice of your healthcare professional. AI explanations and translations may be incomplete. Read the original label when possible; do not treat a missing warning or a favorable result as proof of safety.

Important limits

AI can misread labels and miss allergens. Manufacturing and kitchen cross-contact cannot be detected or guaranteed. BiteSmart is not medical advice and not a medical device. Always confirm with the actual label, the manufacturer or restaurant staff, and your clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Can BiteSmart tell me a food is safe?

No. It gives a helpful second look against your profile. Results can be wrong or incomplete, so confirm before eating.

Does it detect cross-contact or "may contain" risks?

It can point out precautionary wording it reads on a label, but it cannot know how a product was made or how a kitchen prepares food.

What can I scan?

You can scan a packaged food label or barcode, paste an ingredient list, photograph a menu, or look up a dish. Barcode lookups depend on listed ingredients.

Which allergens does it look for?

Profiles include the 14 major EU-regulated allergens. You can also add dietary preferences, intolerances, custom ingredients, and notes.
